Mike Daak
I spent about 12 years on Midway, between 1983 and 2002, via 3 separate tours. I first went to the island as an employee of Bendix Field Engineering. In 1996, I returned to the island as an employee of Midway Phoenix Corporation. So many stories – here are a few of my favorites –
I finished watching two videos. One was your “Battle Lost” and the other a bike tour video from 2025.
I’ve Googled around but not found anything that details both sides of the “disagreements.”
I read “the spirit of the Cooperative Agreement began to fail
miserably” and “It failed due to not having an appointed moderator to resolve disagreements between
FWS and MPC”.
You have detailed shortcomings of the FWS but it’s hard not to think MPC just “took their ball and went home.”
I like much of what you presented “back in the day” when visitors regularly were on the Atoll.
But what now? Please point me to reading/viewing so I can better understand the past and how you all see things moving forward. Thanks
Dear Mr Daak, I am interested to know if you were on Midway during the year of 1990? I am asking because there was a military aircraft that emergency landed there around 2;30 am, 9 Mar 1990. It was a USAF C-5 Galaxy, it’s largest aircraft and only the second one to ever land there at that time. I was aboard that aircraft and spent a couple of days for the aircraft to be repaired. If you have any knowledge of that incident or know of anyone that has knowledge of it I would really appreciate it if you can let me know. I cannot find any information so far about the emergency both on official and unofficial sources ans yet I have a picture of the island given to me by the Mgr of the Canteen who was there at the time. Any assistance you can give is greatly appreciated. Thank You.
This is absolutely a fantastic website.
I lived on Midway when I was in the 5th grade and my father was in the Navy.
I was the photo editor for Air&Space/Smithsonian magazine for the entirety of the publication, it was sunsetted in 2022.
I suggested a story to the magazine when the Navy moved off the island when Phoenix Air was there. I returned in 1997, and it was heaven to be back. I was heart broken by the way things have unfolded there with FWS
I recently went to a Hall of Fame dinner in GA for Mark Thompson and reunited with many from Phoenix Air.
I know Lisa Bracken also …
