Eastern Chow

One stormy week we were unable to get chow over to Eastern, so after a day on what little leftovers we had, we dug into the C rations. Now, I tell you….that is some fine dining!!
One can of Vienna sausage or potted meat.
One pack of crackers.
One can of….Milk? It looked like milk except for the lumps!!

We tried it on cereal as it was not drinkable, but I can imagine some guy in battle who hadn’t eaten for a couple days would love to have it!  I think the lumps were butter since that was before the days of homogenized milk. You had to shake it up to get the cream and milk mixed, but I think in this case the cream churned its own butter!

We survived!! And sure did appreciate the next chow can coming over! Looks like they could have flown the can over in a chopper after a couple days! After all, we had the original runways and they were still in good shape back then!  Some of the guys used to take the jeep down the runway to see how fast it would go….running aviation fuel!! I think maybe 64 was the record, can’t really remember!

Fun times along with demanding work!
