Fran Kraus – Story

My name is Fran Kraus.  I was a teacher at the George Cannon School, on Midway Island.

In June of 1970, I walked into the workroom of George Cannon school.  Lying near the mimeograph machine was this enchanting 10-page photo/story.  I took it home and traced it, then took the story back and left it in the workroom.  This photo/story was made by ‘Mike’ (though I really don’t know Mike’s last name).  I always thought the story should be shared with other Midway-ites.

If anyone viewing this photo/story knows the original author, please let us know your full name.  I’d love to for you get full credit for your story and amazing artistic talent.

  1. What a wonderful story with amazing artwork. We should all have been required to do something similar for a keepsake. So hope you find the author. Nancy Johnson, dependent who attended school on Midway in 55-56.

  2. Fran, what a beautiful story. I’m so glad you were able to recapture it! As you know, we were on Midway at the same time as you, as was Molly Murphy and her family; I wish I knew of a student named Mike. I’m assuming you would have known if the artist had been on the faculty. (Molly Murphy, you were younger at the time, but can you think of any high school boys named Mike in the late ’60’s?)

Thanks, Mike Daak, for adding this to your beautiful website.

  3. It is nice to hear from you again. Social media and and the seeming mystical vagaries of our essential electronic tools can be maddening. Happy to hear you survived, heart-stopping, but indomitable.

  4. Wow, that’s excellent! Both the artwork and writing are outstanding. Thank you for sharing this.
