“The FWS is spending more money than ever, and the island is going
to hell. They won't maintain the buildings to justify tearing them
down, including the historic Trans Pacific Cable houses and historic
military buildings. I call it demolition by neglect.
They won't mow the weeds, nor will they use herbicides, and so the
Verbasina is running rampant, displacing ground that the birds would
normally use to nest.
The FWS won't paint the buildings either, which exposes old layers
of lead based paint, and causes the paint to chip off and fall to
the ground to be ingested by the baby gooney birds.
The FWS is further displacing native species on the islands to
foster a non native species whose population is growing so rapidly
that the FWS is, or will be having to address a situation of native
habitat displacement. This is from another of their hand of God
experiments.
When MPC was there MPC meticulously maintained the island at no cost
to the taxpayer, plus they facilitated an affordable visitor
program. It now is costing taxpayers millions of dollar per year and
the public who is footing the bill can't practically go there
anymore. The FWS promises visitation but what the visitor can do and
where they can go has been severely restricted and, of course, the
cost has skyrocketed. They are also encouraging visitor to work when
they come out, which is fine if that's what you’re going there to
do.
The islands are deteriorating at a great cost both environmentally,
and fiscally. Another example of misguided American tax money at
work.”
